St.Moses The Black was born in Ethiopia and was known for his great physical strength. The Egyptians mocked him as the “Black” due to his dark skin, but he eventually accepted this as a “badge of honor”. The story of St. Moses’ profound personal conversion from a violent gang leader to a holy monk in the Oriental Orthodox Church is an amazing inspiration for us all. when we read about the Saints life, St.Moses emphasizes Christ’s power to forgive and remake even the most sinful soul, with humility being the path to this transformation.
-St.Moses the black was not new to insults, when he arrived in Egypt, many insults and slurs were directed at Moses on purpose, in order that the clergy and monastic community could test Moses. they wanted to see if Saint Moses would give in and engage in defending his character against racists, but Moses was extremely well versed in scriptures and knew that those hurling the insults were doing this to test him. For this context it was common for monks to insult one another on occasions for the sake of testing them to see if their way of life gave only the appearance of virtue, but did not contain it. Basically to see if St.Moses actually wanted to seek God, or if he just cared about others perspective of him more than God’s perspective. St.Moses the black famously remained silent to those that insulted him. Even despite “being troubled by what they said” St.Moses remained remarkably humble, allowing some time to pass before engaging back. which proved St.Moses didint live for outward approval. St.Moses didint care if there were people who sincerely thought he was less of a man due to his skin or if they were doing it to test him. St.Moses became so deeply devoted in his love for Jesus Christ that he chose to live very monastically and leave behind the life of a gangster/seeking approval of men. His writings often talk about humbling ourselves to transform for our sake. we can say that Abba Moses here shows us that sometimes silence is more powerful than speech.
