Phoenix police officer fatally shoots suspect who pulled out a knife during struggle

Pheonix, AZ - The man who police said pulled a knife on officers and was shot early Sunday morning near 2030 E. Southern Ave. has been identified as Efrain Hidalgo, 36.

A two-officer patrol unit assigned to the South Mountain Precinct in Phoenix was investigating a man riding a bicycle at about 12:45 am. Aug. 31.

Officers attempted to talk to the man, but he ran away. Officers caught the man and attempted to detain him, police said.

“The man resisted officers and was seen removing a knife from his possession,” the Phoenix Police Department release stated.

“As one of the officers continued struggling to detain the man, the other officer verbally alerted his partner to the knife and removed his duty gun, discharged it and struck the man.”

Additional officers arrived and provided medical aid until Phoenix Fire Department personnel responded. Hidalgo was taken to a hospital, where he died.
