Austin, TX - The Austin Police Department (APD) has identified a man suspected of shooting an Austin police officer early Wednesday morning near Zilker Park.

Police identified the suspect as 30-year-old Brandon Thompson. Police said Thompson is charged with Attempted Capital Murder of a Peace Officer, a first-degree felony, and Burglary of a Residence, a first-degree felony. He remains in custody at a local hospital.

The incident happened at around 4 a.m. on Wednesday in the 700 block of Azie Morton Road, as officers responded to reports of a stolen vehicle.

APD Chief Lisa Davis said during a media briefing on Wednesday that the officer was conducting a park curfew check and had called for a tow truck for the stolen vehicle when two people emerged from a tree line. According to APD, a male suspect shot a woman in the back of the head before shooting the officer. The officer returned fire, though it is unclear if the suspect was hit.

A second officer drove the injured officer to the hospital while emergency crews assisted the woman. The injured officer is expected to be OK.

During the search for the suspect, an Austin ISD officer reported seeing a person matching the suspect's description. The suspect then led police on a chase into the Barton Hills neighborhood.

Police said the suspect entered a home, where the homeowner shot him in the arm and leg.

Davis said she didn't "think we're going to have a positive outcome" for the woman who was shot by the suspect. She added, "It's not looking great for her, but she hasn't been pronounced at this time."
