In ancient times, There was a Dwarven blacksmith. The iron in his region was rather poor and despite the skill he lavished upon his blades, they would always break. One day a mysterious stranger, robed in black, approached him at his forge and offered to enchant the blacksmith's forge that blades made in it's fire would never perish. The blacksmith was suspicious, and asked what the stranger wanted in return. "The deed itself is my payment," said the stranger. The smith opened his mouth to reject the offer, when his gaze fell upon one of his broken swords. Hesitantly the dwarf agreed.

The stranger pointed at the dwarf's forge and began an incantation. Clouds gathered and snow began to fly in the valley, despite the summer. The ground shook and spikes of obsidian shot up around the forge. The fire, which had been a warm red, became an arcane violet. "It is done," said the stranger to the horrified dwarf. The smith cautiously took up his tools as the stranger watched, and forged a blade. When the sword was completed, the dwarf tested the blade against the obsidian. As he struck the rock, the blade sheared in two. Outraged, the dwarf confronted the mysterious black robed man. "Strike the anvil with this broken blade," said the man, and the dwarf, full of suspicion, complied. The sheared blade clove the anvil in two and the blade took no hurt.

All blades fired in this forge would break soon after forging, but the shards would never rust, nor dull, nor break. Much mischief was done with those blades. The forge came to be known as The Splinter-Forge. From then on, the snow never departed that region and the violet fire never cooled.
