New York-based Johnnie Bradfield, a southpaw with a unique style of boxing, just claimed the title of world lightweight boxing champion. Although he presents himself to the public as a kind man who adores his mother, his real life is very different from that public image. A reporter who was about to reveal Johnnie's real lifestyle passes away at Johnnie's apartment while unconscious from intoxication. Johnnie, who has a few hundred dollars of his several thousand dollars of accumulated cash in his pocket, goes on the run after learning that the authorities also think he died in a fiery car wreck, even though he knows he didn't kill the reporter but is accused in doing so.
