THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (PART 2) The Holy Spirit versus the spirit holy (our spirit made holy).
“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” (John 14:26) Last lesson we spoke of how the work of the Holy Spirit is 2-part, in that one work is to the lost and one is to the redeemed. This lesson focuses on the second work. The Holy Spirit is a person; the Comforter, Advocate, Teacher, and ‘Remembrancer’ (the One who brings all things of the Word of God to our remembrance) sent by the Father in His Son’s now exalted and powerful name that is above all names, unto His redeemed. This is not to say the Holy Spirit was not in this Realm before Pentecost, but that He has now been sent in these different New Testament capacities, which are now only made possible in the power of Jesus’ name. And that new work of the Holy Spirit being for a previously unimaginable internal work in the willing redeemed soul, unto union sonship (see the Lord’s prayer in John 17 wherein Jesus prays that all that are His would be One with Him and with the Father… “that they may be one, even as we are one.”). That is to say; a work in any redeemed soul brought into the revelation light of this Gospel ‘truth’ unto sanctification, willing to be transformed into His Son’s image while alive on this Earth with promise of a resurrection in union glory as the manifest ‘new creature.’ (1st John 3:1-3… “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.”) This would require that the Holy Spirit both tutor, convict of disqualifying sin, and discipline… and yet all the while comfort and advocate within the renewed mind of the believer (as we renew our mind to the Word of God) for a ‘sinlessness consciousness’ without license found in a standing before the Father through abiding in Christ Jesus unto that finished work. Sinlessness consciousness being a state of humbly and contritely renewing our minds to the Word as to who God says we are, (as opposed to ‘flunking ourselves’ when we sin, agreeing with who our adversary says we are) and moving forward, dusting ourselves off, and getting back in the race. We maintain our peace with Christ in this standing.
The work of the Holy Spirit is… to teach, purge, remind, warn, comfort, empower, and facilitate transformation in this life… step by step, revelation by revelation, by continuing to look into the mirror of Jesus, from “faith to faith”…in ‘putting off’ and ‘putting on’… until others can see the image of the Lord in and reflected by us. (2nd Corinthians 3:18… “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”) “…that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.” (2nd Corinthians 4:11b) “He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.” (Ist John 2:6) “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14,16) All these verses point to our responsibility to walk as Jesus did while on the Earth living as a man.
For the Holy Spirit to bring into remembrance means to remind the believer of the revolutionary Words of Christ that speak to who they are in Him. (Colossians 3:1-3… “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” See also 1st John 5:20, Romans 5:1-2, 1st Peter 1:2-5, Colossians 1:21-23, Romans 8:33-34, Romans 4:8; 5:17; 6:11, Romans 8:1-5, James 1:25, Galatians 5:1) And it speaks to how the Holy Spirit advocates in the court of the believer’s mind, for their right reckoning of their spiritual position regarding both sin and righteousness in loving faith, where there is neither shame, unworthiness, condemnation, or guilt allowed that would shipwreck our faith… short of the goal of New Testament instruction; that of love out of a pure heart. See 1st Timothy 1:5… “Now the end of the commandment (New Testament instruction) is charity (love) out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned” (genuine faith).
The 3rd Chapter of Ephesians… “For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel: Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power. Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; And to make all men see what is the fellowship (koinonia/communion) of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him. Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory. For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit (the Holy Spirit) in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power (of the Holy Spirit) that worketh in us (unto transformation), Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.”
Continuing from where we left off reading in ‘The Holy Spirit (Part 1)’ in John 16:12… “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
Howbeit when he, the pnuema/spirit of truth (here the article and context show that the Holy Spirit is said by Jesus to be the source of and Giver of truth), is come, he (a person) will guide you into all truth (in the purposes of My incarnation and My Atonement death and resurrection in regard to the Kingdom of God that is to come): for he shall not speak of himself (outside of My Words); but whatsoever he (a person) shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me (Who came to glorify the Father): for he shall receive/take of mine (those things shadowed in the Law: the Kingdom, the first Adam, blood atonement, temple, priests, sacrifices, feasts etc), and shall shew it (the truth of their typical meanings) unto you” (for the further inward work yet to be done upon the redeemed soul).
(It should go without saying that in the highly exalting of Jesus in these to-be-revealed truths, the Holy Spirit also highly exalts the Father.) The Holy Spirit presents to the believer out of the Word Who Jesus is (the Creator, the Son of God and incarnate Son of man, the Second Adam, the Lamb of God, the express image of the Father, and the model for the redeemed soul’s transformation), What Jesus has done (lived and died as a man and was victorious over satan and this World; was the First-Born from the dead, fully propitiated for fallen man for the purposes foreordained), What He is doing (mediating as High Priest Mediator at the right hand of the Father in Heaven) and What He will do (come again and fulfill the Old and New Testament prophecies and promises of God, take His investiture as King of kings, judge the living and dead relative to establishing His heavenly and earthly Millennial Kingdom in this Realm, take a Bride, overthrow and incarcerate His enemies.)
So it is that the coming of the Holy Spirit is to the redeemed believer the enlightening Written truth, unto faith, in the cause and place of His present absence. (The Holy Spirit revealing the Written Word to our hearts.)
And as stated above, the Holy Spirit’s work in every generation that has followed for 2000 years, has particularly to do with revealing to each redeemed soul what it means to be in Christ and the need and value of exercising sanctifying faith in denying self and following Jesus’ example in living in loving faithfulness to the Father. Which is to say… see themselves and others clearly in the truth of their great value that God assessed us to be in the incarnation and Blood sacrifice of His Son in redeeming us from satan’s kingdom. Not that we were any way worthy of His rescue, but while we were yet steeped in sin and wickedness, He purchased us by His own Blood.
That He might inspire us to overcome/deny/refuse to follow ‘self-centeredness’ and follow Him in transforming us into Christlikeness so as to be faithful and fruitful witnesses in the World. Which is the marker by which we will be found worthy or unworthy of the catching up of those faithful living or raising up of the faithful dead in the First Resurrection into Christ’s coming Millennial Kingdom in this Realm.
The more truth of the Word of the Father and Son’s Kingdom purposes for us redeemed heard and received (which is to say that we have incorporated that truth into our minds and bodies in the living), the more we can bear to be led into by the Holy Spirit.
For the Word of prophecy teaches to the wise and foolish both this world’s present wickedness and the sure future destruction that will come upon it… and that we were appointed to be alive on this Earth, in the time of the Holy Spirit’s work. That in the acquiring by faith… redemption, and by faith energized by love… the sanctifying work unto the greater purposes of eternal living after this current Dispensation of mercy and grace, wherein even judged and condemned satan is yet un-arrested and serves his purpose, until it has run its appointed course.
Note again that the Holy Spirit represents to redeemed man that Jesus the Son of man (Who in overcoming) was to be the model for him to follow in His footsteps while alive in this World. (See Ephesians 2:10, 1st John 2:6; 4:17 which are more verses that show that by the power of the Holy Spirit, we CAN walk as Jesus our Forerunner walked… “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” … “He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.” … “Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.”) Jesus, in accordance with our need, was therefore ‘baptized’ with the Holy Spirit by God with His power. We read in His Word the testimony of the Holy Spirit penned by anointed men; in Luke 3:21-22… “Now when all the people were (being water) baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And The pneuma the holy (Greek) descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.” And then right after this, we see in Luke 4:1… “And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost (Greek) pneuma/spirit hagion/holy (full of the power from on high that Jesus told His disciples to tarry for… as seen in Luke 24:49… that power being the gift) returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit (the Giver of the spirit holy and power and gifts) into the wilderness, Being forty days tempted of the devil.”
Acts 10:38… “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost pneuma hagion and with power (of the Holy Spirit): who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” This man with a spirit holy (His spirit being holy since His conception in the womb), Who at His water baptism received the power of the Holy Spirit given by the Father, then overcome satan, his temptations and natural desires… and in this way (of Him being a Son of man), we can follow this man as our Model for transformation. Note that Jesus, as a man, walked on the earth for 30 years, but it wasn’t until He was baptized by the Holy Spirit that He walked in the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit. He modeled for us how the Holy Spirit changed the dynamic of His living out Who He was called to be. We see this also in the change of the 120 who were tarrying in Jerusalem waiting for the power of the Holy Spirit to empower them to be His witnesses with signs and wonders.
Paul in 1st Corinthians spoke of a Gospel that was not just with words but with power. 1st Corinthians 2:4-6… “And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling, And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing (persuasive) words of man’s (human) wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit (no article in the Greek) spirit (in the gift of the word of wisdom) and power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.”
“In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of (Greek) the spirit (pneuma holy), which they that believe on him should receive: for spirit (pneuma holy) was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)” (John 7:37-39) This Passage was an allusion to Jesus, Who was in the Wilderness type the ‘rock’ struck from which the river of water flowed to perpetuate the lives of the redeemed Israelites in the school of ‘faith’ until they reached the Promised Land. Thus, after Jesus was smitten and ascended into Heaven, He received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit’s power and gifts that answers to the river of living waters flowing from the redeemed spirit within him, brought out of darkness into the light of holiness.
“And (Jesus after resurrection before His final ascension), being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me (which had to do with the restored Kingdom blessing to Israel upon national repentance… not having to do with the ‘Church’ of the One New Man or this present Dispensation… see the following two verses from the Old Testament which speak of Israel’s promise of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on them as a nation: Isaiah 44:1-3… “Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen: Thus saith the Lord that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen. For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring…” Also see Joel 2:28… “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions…”) “For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost pneuma hagion not many days hence…” (which could only come after Jesus’ glorification). That being the promise of the Father which answered to the outpouring gift of the Holy Spirit on the 120 followers of Christ on the day of Pentecost. Acts 2:4… “And they were all filled with (in the Greek) pneuma hagion…. (the divine nature of God, which of course is the greatest gift of the Holy Spirit, the Giver… then accompanied by the further gift of ‘tongues’ - 1st Corinthians 12:10-11) …and began to speak with other tongues, as (Greek) the pneuma (the Holy Spirit) gave them utterance.”
So Peter, him having first received the revelation of Jesus as Christ/Messiah (Matthew 16:15), explained the experience in Old Testament terms of restored Kingdom blessing of Israel… applying Joel’s prophecy, and now called for Israel’s national repentance post-crucifixion. Acts 2:38… “Then Peter said unto them, repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the pneuma holy” (Greek… the gift of the Divine nature of God/the power for the spirit of man to be made holy).
(On that Day of Pentecost’s supernatural baptism… it was followed by the baptism by water and spirit of 3000 more repentant Jewish believers in Jesus as Christ (the anointed Messiah) that selfsame day. It is more than reasonable to assume the like manifesting of the power of the Holy Spirit on these as well, in that they also spoke in tongues. As this would have been the anticipation that came with Peter’s declaration of promise… Acts 2:37… “Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?”)
And on another day soon following Pentecost, Peter expounds the Kingdom restoration calling once again to Israel. See Acts 3:19-26 which is after the healing of the lame man by Peter at the gate of the Temple… “Repent ye (national Israel) therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out (including their crucifixion of their Messiah), when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: Whom the heaven must -- receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people. Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. Ye (Israelites) are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers (being then the rightful heirs of His theocratic Kingdom on the Earth), saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. Unto you first (to the Jew first) God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.”
These Words given Peter were in the light of his limited Kingdom understanding in line with that short Dispensation of the Nation of Israel after their crucifying Jesus their Messiah yet being offered again the exclusive rights of commonwealth as God’s Kingdom in the Earth. The Mystery of the Kingdom of heavens and another Nation’s inheritance understanding was wisely withheld. And that until the calling of the Lord and tutoring of Paul by the Holy Spirit in the mysteries of the One New Man’s inheritance in the Kingdom of heavens. (Galatians 1:11-18… “But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers. But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace, To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days.” Ephesians 3:9-11… “And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God…” Colossians 1:25-29… “Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.”)
Luke 19:12-13… “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return. And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, occupy till I come.” This parable of Luke 19:11-27 was the ‘typed/shadowed’ prophetic scene of the Lord speaking to His disciples being played out, starting in Acts 1 in 30AD through Acts 28:28 in the spring of 61AD when Paul was first imprisoned in Rome. Verse 17… after 3 days Paul “called the chief of the Jews together…” Verse 23… “And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses (Moses predicting a prophet who would come after him in Deuteronomy 18:15… “The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken…”), and out of the prophets, from morning till evening. And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not. And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, ‘Well spake the Holy Ghost by Isaiah the prophet unto our fathers, Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them…” (now turning again and continuing in the type seen in Luke 19:14 as has being played out from 61AD… “But his citizens (the Jews) hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us…” …and although the citizens of His coming Kingdom changed, His servants’ stewardship continued among another people (no longer to the Jews, but now to the Gentiles). Moving on then to Verse 27… “But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.” (In the anti-type, this is unbelieving Israel being cut off from the Olive Tree of Romans 11.) This answers, on the one hand, to a few years later Rome’s invasion and Israel’s destruction in 70 AD and 135 AD, and the continuing persecution over the last 2000 years… and on the other hand, to ‘Jacob’s Trouble’ of Israel’s Last Days’ demise in the 3 ½ years just prior to the Nobleman’s/Christ’s Return. Note that the ‘servants of the Nobleman’ didn’t stop preaching. The audience to whom they preached is the only thing that changed. Now the message was preached to the citizens of the Nation of the One New Man.
“Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it (here is the birth of the Nation of the One New Man in one day - that day being as of Acts 28:28, when the birth of the New Testament “Church” came into being). And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves. And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him, Preaching the kingdom of Godand teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all (revelation) confidence, no man forbidding him…” (which was to say, the preaching of the earthly and heavenly portions of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ set apart now for the Nation of the One New Man, wherein now the Jew and the Gentile would stand on the same ground of grace/power unto transformation worthiness for the heavenly Kingdom inheritance. “In whom (Jesus the Christ) ye also are being built together for a habitation (dwelling place) of God through/by the (power of the Holy) Spirit.” - Ephesians 2:13-22)
So it was that the finishing of the fulfilment of Joel’s 2 seasons of rain; ‘the former and latter’ and Old Testament prophets’ sure prophecies concerning the final destiny of the Nation of Israel were postponed. Daniel’s prophecy of Israel being restored as God’s Kingdom in the Earth after 70 weeks of 7 years were completed… was then in play in the time of Jesus. 69 weeks of 7 years (483 years) since Daniel’s prophecy commenced, had come and gone… with Jesus being rejected and Crucified as predicted… leaving one 7-year period yet to be fulfilled sometime in our near future before Israel’s final and eternal Kingdom restoration will happen. (Daniel Chapter 9 with Revelation 11:1-2, Matthew 24:1-31) And the Second Rain (the spiritual medium) on the Nation of Israel will come; that being the second and greater outpouring of the Holy Spirit. (Pentecost being the first lighter rains and the second heavier rains being the future outpouring when Christ Returns.) Joel 2:23b-32 … “and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month. And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you. And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed. And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.”
