China's 100-Mile Quantum Network: A New Era in Teleportation

Chinese scientists at the University of Science and Technology of China have established the world's first practical quantum teleportation network spanning over 100 miles across multiple cities in Anhui Province. Operational since late 2023, this network connects seven quantum nodes across urban centers using specialized photonic crystal fibers with remarkably low signal loss. Unlike previous experiments, this system achieves quantum teleportation success rates exceeding 91%. It is already used for practical applications, including quantum-secured banking transactions, distributed quantum computing, and ultra-precise time synchronization. The network represents a global transition from laboratory demonstrations to practical infrastructure, prompting accelerated quantum networking efforts. While significant challenges remain, including temperature requirements and bandwidth limitations, this achievement begins a new quantum information infrastructure with profound implications for cybersecurity, computing, and communications in the coming decade.
