The Mahdi (Arabic for "the Guided One") is a prophesied messianic figure in Islamic eschatology who is believed to appear near the end of times to defeat injustice and evil, and establish a global Islamic kingdom before the Day of Judgment. The concept of the Mahdi differs between major Islamic branches: Twelver Shia Muslims believe the Mahdi is a historical figure, the Twelfth Imam, who is currently in a state of "occultation" (hiding) and will reappear. Sunni Muslims, on the other hand, believe the Mahdi will be a wise ruler descended from the Prophet Muhammad.
