Back pedals on a treadmill should probably be the most popular knee rehab exercise. It's an amazing warmup to reduce knee pain and potentiate quad muscle activation. It's highly unlikely that you will injure yourself doing a back pedal as well. You are in complete control of how much knee bend and pressure you put, so it makes it very controllable to progress as needed
