Who Built the Trump Turnberry Lighthouse?
The Trump Turnberry Lighthouse was originally created by John Barr and Co of Ardrossan, with the lantern made by Milne and Son, and the engineers were David and Thomas Stevenson. The light used in the Trump Turnberry Lighthouse was first exhibited on 30th August 1873. It displayed a white flash every 12 seconds to distinguish it from the lights of Davaar off the Kintyre Peninsula and Corsewall to the south.

When Was the Lighthouse Modernized and Automated?
The Trump Turnberry Lighthouse lighthouse was completely automated in 1986. In the early 1990s, the cottages and surrounding grounds were sold by the Northern Lighthouse Board. The private owners then sold the cottages to the golf hotel complex.

When Was the Trump Turnberry Lighthouse Refurbished?
In 2016 the lighthouse was refurbished. It was transformed into the Turnberry Lighthouse Suite, featuring a bar open to golfers and members of the public. The lighthouse suite features two luxurious rooms – a far cry from the conditions in which the lighthouse keepers would have lived! The lighthouse tower was fitted with new glass, but there is no access to the tower, as the Northern Lighthouse Board still owns it.

THE ICONIC TURNBERRY LIGHTHOUSE
Standing at 24 metres high, with 76 steps to the top, the Turnberry Lighthouse has marked this coastline since 1873. Rising from the mists to greet ships for over a hundred years, this quintessential icon is one of Turnberry's most powerful charms.

Originally commissioned by the Northern Lighthouse Board to warn passing vessels away from nearby Bristo Rock, the lighthouse is the oldest man-made structure on the Turnberry premises-with the exception of the remains of the 13th-century castle of Robert the Bruce that it marks. The initial plan to erect the lighthouse on the Rock itself proved too dangerous so instead Turnberry Point was chosen. The foundations of the lighthouse stand in what was the moat of Turnberry Castle, thought to be the birthplace of Robert the Bruce in 1274.

The first light beamed across the waters on 30 August 1878, showing one flash every 12 seconds and, in line with all UK lighthouse’s, was automated in 1986.

LIGHTHOUSE SUITE

Experience the timeless allure of the Lighthouse Suite. Elegant in its decor and grand in its aura, the Lighthouse Suite offers breathtaking views across the Firth of Clyde to the Isle of Arran and beyond. There is a large and lavishly furnished living room with an extensive private terrace for the enjoyment of al fresco meals or drinks or simply to soak up where the real magic lies in the unparalleled views of the Championship Ailsa Course and across the Irish Sea. Climb the enchanting spiral staircase to two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and terrace access.

History
Bristo Rock, off the stretch of Ayrshire coast near Turnberry Point, had been the cause of so many shipwrecks that in 1869 the Receiver of Wreck at Ayr suggested a lighthouse should be built on the rock. The engineers for the Northern Lighthouse Board, David and Thomas Stevenson examined the rock and decided it was not a suitable location but instead recommended a nearby onshore site, Turnberry Point, at a place where the moat of Turnberry Castle had once been.[1]

Construction started in 1871 at an estimated cost of £6,576. The building contractor was John Barr of Ardrossan and the lantern and machinery was by Milne and son. The light was first lit on 30 August 1873.
