Charlie Kirk, changing minds and culture
Jason and Selina talk about personal stuff and how Charlie affected them.
This is the letter to the CT State central reps
Dear Republican State Central representative,
While it is perhaps unusual to send out something that looks like a form letter introduction, please understand that each member of the State Central committee is receiving this letter as is Chairman Proto.
First, I want to thank you for putting together the memorial event for Charlie Kirk at the Cadillac Ranch. I hope you’ll acknowledge that the presence of the Logical Conservative bus made the event even more uplifting. I especially enjoyed Pastor Dell’s speech and prayer. He made a great connection to the audience. It was obvious that the singer also connected well with the audience, even if she was a bit nervous. Her genuineness was endearing. Both President Trump and Charlie Kirk set a new standard for people just being who they are rather than trying to give a fake, overly polished demeanor.
But now I want to address what CT MAGA conservatives have been discussing: The utterly lackluster performance of the CT GOP. Dan Shultz, who came up with the idea of Precinct Strategy, told me that most state GOPs do not have all of their state central seats filled. This is certainly not an issue in CT! And yet, here we are with over 40 seats in the CT legislature that were unopposed by a Republican, zero Republican representation in congress, and a Democrat super majority. This, while 40% of CT citizens voted for Trump.
In a conversation with Jim Rogers at the Conservative Women’s Forum, he said that the party couldn’t help it, that CT voters were too disengaged, and that each town was too isolated to get anyone to work together. I’ve been collecting stories from people who have tried and failed to make progress with their RTCs. Ben isn’t wrong about the isolation and disengagement. I recently heard a story about two men nearly coming to blows at an RTC meeting. Another person, when asked to attend and participate, replied, “Hell no. Why would I want another recipe for coleslaw?” Apparently that particular group was a social club instead of an RTC.
CT has been divided, and long before the nation was. In his speech, Chairman Proto spoke of how important it was to listen. Many of us in CT feel like no one in the CT GOP is listening.
After last week’s two brutal murders, the Left has been doing their best to ignore the problems. We’re all angry that they refuse to take any responsibility for the outcome of their actions and provocations.
CT Republicans and right-leaning centrists have an extremely low opinion of the CT GOP. To put it bluntly, the party has a horrible reputation and our assumption is that the party leadership is fine with that. I’ve regularly heard the expression ‘country club’ in reference to an exclusionary, and unwelcoming attitude of many RTCs. New people entering some RTCs are ignored, brushed aside, and generally made to feel they have no right to be there. I myself have yet to attend an RTC meeting because the Ansonia chairman - Tony Mammone - chose not to reply to my emails for 10 months and ‘currently doesn’t have any meetings scheduled.’
So who is at fault here? Until we had four years of president Biden, I didn’t realize how important my actual participation was. As Pastor Dell pointed out, Boomers, Gen X, and even Millennials allowed this to happen. We checked out. But now we see what’s happening and we’re getting back in the game. What will you leaders in the CT GOP take responsibility for? Here are some things that would go a long way towards restoring trust and confidence. While I understand that the state party has no specific control of local RTCs, they must still operate within the state rules. Word from State Central Reps about how things should be run would have an effect.
RTCs should happily welcome new members, and expand the number of people invited to be members. This is both good manners and an investment in the party’s future. Those who cannot bring themselves to behave in a civil and gracious manner do not deserve the positions they hold.
Have monthly meetings. Democrats don’t take a big break after elections.
Get rid of proxy voting. Everyone I spoke with sees this as a way to cheat.
Don’t allow members to vote if they haven’t been showing up for meetings.
These are just four things that came from the feedback I’ve been receiving, but they would be a good start.
In addition, the CT GOP could be spending some of the $3 million you raised last year to define and PAY FOR a digital strategy and implementation for itself and all the RTC's across the state, and hire a person or two to be full time in creating and maintaining (THE MAINTAINING part is critical, in order to keep the content fresh and relevant) its online presence. Right now, the CTGOP is virtually and digitally invisible, and has not progressed past 20th century means of communicating. No, Facebook does not count as a website, especially when there are so many conservatives on X. [That would be Twitter]
Since I am co-host on the CT Common Sense Podcast, any of you would be welcome to come on and talk about what changes you plan to make, and what you plan to take responsibility for. MAGA people look forward to your response. The Republican Party is what we have to represent us. Let’s make it better together.
