Fray and Sway

America is a country founded on Free Speech, but the misunderstanding of what that actually means is causing harm. This week on Do Better Ranch we are taking a dive into the First Amendment. We owe it to ourselves to have insight into the 1st Amendment. Why is it first? What were the Founders thinking? What drove them to express it as part of our Constitution?
When you hear the phrase “Free Speech” the rare few may think of Canada, Sweden, Australia, Germany, maybe the UK – all of which espouse “free speech” with “reasonable limits”, but most people think of America and of our 1st Amendment. We own that turf.
We cannot allow the fray of the frothing uninformed and narrow-minded to sway us into intellectual numbness, mediocrity, or worse misguided actions.
FRAY
So, what if what we THINK we “KNOW” isn’t even true?
An emotional attachment to “facts” is dangerous. And like our beloved Charlie Kirk taught us, “"We record all of it so that we put [it] on the internet so people can see these ideas collide. When people stop talking, that’s when you get violence. That’s when civil war happens, because you start to think the other side is so evil, and they lose their humanity."
SWAY
What we know is driven by programming, tradition, culture, religion, politics, and our own perceptions and experience.
Lies have been fed to us as facts, on purpose.
Personally, until I “KNOW” through research, conversation, or grounded discernment, I choose these 7 tenets to stay above the fray and the sway.
1. There is a Plan.
2. We’re here now for a reason.
3. The end is not for everyone.
4. We resist and refrain from confusing true EVIL with humans making poor choices or demonstrating annoying behaviors.
5. Actively practice perspective-mirrors.
6. Fear has no place here, ever.
7. Judgment is above my pay grade.

We can always Do Better.
