The Human Body in Symbolism

In this chapter that we explore in this video, Manly P. Hall explores the idea that the human body is the most ancient, profound, and universal symbol—a living microcosm reflecting the greater cosmos. Ancient traditions—from the Greeks and Egyptians to the Hindus—viewed man’s triune nature as essential to spiritual and ethical formation. The Mysteries of various traditions taught that the universe’s laws, elements, and powers are mirrored within the human form, establishing a sacred analogy between the Macrocosm (the greater universe) and the Microcosm (man himself). Instead of striving to comprehend the infinite Divinity directly, early philosophers turned inward—studying man to gain insight into cosmic mysteries. The chapter outlines a symbolic theological system in which God is the 'Grand Man' and man the 'little god', further distinguishing the Macroprosophus (Divine Life of the Macrocosm) and the Microprosophus (Divine Life within man). Hall also relates how early priests used statues of the human form in temple sanctuaries as living diagrams, richly inscribed with hieroglyphs, to represent cosmic structures. Over time, these became misunderstood and ultimately worshiped as idols—ultimately leading to spiritual decline when their deeper meanings were forgotten.
