William Tucker Talks about Indentured Servitude in the Colonies

My name is William Tucker, and I was the first African child born in the colonies. My parents, Antonio and Isabella, were Africans who came to America on the White Lion, a Dutch slave ship, taken by pirates, and brought to Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia, bringing with it the first Africans to the colonies to be sold as slaves. Because it was against Virginia and even colonial law to hold slaves, they were all sold into indentured servitude and had to work four to seven years to earn their freedom.
I too grew up in indentured servitude, but when my parents completed their contract, they were given their freedom and a parcel of land. With hard work and determination, I was able to purchase more land and become a successful farmer.
Despite the opportunities that were available to me, life was still difficult as a black man in Virginia. I faced discrimination from those who saw me inferior, but also support from many because they too had felt oppression who saw them as inferiors in Europe.
I did not let racism stop me. I continued to work hard and build a better life for myself and my family. And when the time came, I fought bravely in defense of my community against an attack by Native Americans. My legacy lives on as a symbol of the resilience and determination of black Americans in the face of adversity.
