I was born into Cebu’s ruling family, in a time when our island was a busy center for trade. Merchants came from Borneo, the Malay Peninsula, and China, bringing goods to exchange for our wax, pearls, and food. As Rajah, my role was to protect my people, keep alliances strong, and manage rivalries—especially with Lapu-Lapu of Mactan, who refused my authority. In 1521, strange ships appeared, led by Ferdinand Magellan. He offered friendship, trade, and a powerful alliance. Through interpreters, he spoke of his king and his god, inviting my queen and me to be baptized. I took the name Carlos, she took the name Juana, and we sealed our alliance. When I asked for help against Lapu-Lapu, Magellan agreed, but in the shallow waters of Mactan, he fell in battle. His death weakened the Spaniards, and mistrust grew between us. I had hoped to strengthen Cebu, but the meeting of our worlds brought both opportunity and danger. That moment changed our island forever.
