Was the First Suspect a Distraction? FBI Explains Investigation

FBI Director Kash Patel appeared on Fox & Friends Monday to discuss the ongoing investigation into the shocking assassination of TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University.

During the interview, Brian Kilmeade asked Patel whether the first individual detained by the FBI—who was later released—may have served as a distraction to allow Kirk’s assassin to escape. Patel explained the FBI’s approach, noting that some individuals falsely take credit for acts of violence, while others are part of a “daisy chain analysis” where cell phone data becomes critical in tracking the true suspect.

The 71-year-old man initially detained, George Zinn, is known locally as a political agitator with a history of bizarre arrests dating back decades. Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill described Zinn as a persistent gadfly at political events, often causing disruptions but generally not directly involved in violent acts.

Patel also revealed that the accused assassin left a note, and while the investigation continues, Zinn has a prior history of threatening acts, including a 2013 bomb threat at the Salt Lake City Marathon.
