Tyler Robinson, 22, was accused of murdering conservative activist Charlie Kirk during an event at Utah Valley University. Robinson’s mother explained that over the past year or so, her son had become more political and had started leaning further to the left, showing greater support for gay and trans rights. She also stated that Robinson began dating his roommate, a biological male who was in the process of transitioning.

This change sparked several arguments with family members, but especially between Robinson and his father, who held very different political views. According to prosecutors, Robinson saw Kirk as a spreader of “hate speech,” which is why he directly targeted him. In a conversation prior to the shooting, Robinson mentioned that Charlie Kirk would be holding an event at UVU, which Robert Robinson, his father, called a stupid venue for the activity. Robinson accused Kirk of spreading hate, which allegedly added to the political motive at the core of the charges.

Although reports confirm Robinson’s ties to left-wing politics, LGBT activism, and family tensions, it has not been fully proven that his roommate’s gender transition was a determining motive for the murder. What has been established in the indictment is that Robinson chose to target Kirk for political reasons and because he believed Kirk’s views were harmful to the LGBT community.
