The Rant-Consequences?
"Cancel culture" is often used to describe the collective action of individuals demanding accountability for their actions, but it is actually a more mundane dynamic. People exercising their agency, such as consumers, citizens, and employees, are exercising their agency in public discourse. The term "cancel culture" is used to portray individuals as unreasonable, irrational, and ultimately, aggressors. However, the reality is that actions have consequences, and the "consequences" are rarely permanent or absolute. "Canceled" individuals often find new platforms or ways to re-enter public life once the initial outcry subsides. The narrative of absolute erasure is largely a myth, as "canceled" individuals often find new platforms or ways to re-enter public life. To frame these reactions as "cancel culture" dismisses the legitimate grievances and the collective power of individuals to demand better. Instead, we should focus on the reality of consequences, asking if the consequences were proportionate to the offense and if the behavior was genuinely harmful or unethical.
