Simon Whistler is absolutely everywhere. In today's reaction video, he is talking about HP Lovecraft and the tragic story of his life. Howard Phillips Lovecraft, born on August 20, 1890, in Providence, Rhode Island, was the only child of Winfield Scott Lovecraft, a traveling salesman, and Sarah Susan Phillips, from a prominent local family. His childhood was marked by intellectual curiosity and isolation; he immersed himself in astronomy, chemistry, and literature, publishing his first amateur journal, The Scientific Gazette, at age 13. Tragedy struck early: his father suffered a mental breakdown in 1893 and died in 1898 from syphilis-related complications, while his mother, overly protective and increasingly unstable, died in 1921 from complications during a hysterectomy. These losses deepened Lovecraft's reclusive tendencies and themes of cosmic horror in his work.
