But scientists have now found out that solar radiation levels on October 30 were unremarkable and nowhere near levels that could affect aircraft electronics. Clive Dyer, a space weather and radiation expert at the University of Surrey in the UK, told Space.com that a cosmic ray from a distant star explosion hit the computer on the plane. Cosmic Rays Can Interact With Microelectronics Cosmic rays arise when massive stars explode in supernovas at the end of their lives. The explosions accelerate streams of protons, hurling them across the universe at the speed of light. "[Cosmic rays] can interact with modern microelectronics and change the state of a circuit," Dyer said. "They can cause a simple bit flip, like a 0 to 1 or 1 to 0. They can mess up information and make things go wrong. But they can cause hardware failures too, when they induce a current in an electronic device and burn it out." The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC, current brings warm water from the tropics northward toward the Arctic, and the flow of warm water helps keep Europe’s winters mild. But as warming temperatures speed the thaw of Arctic ice and cause meltwater from Greenland’s ice sheet to pour into the ocean, scientists warn the cold freshwater could disrupt the current’s flow. A potential collapse of AMOC could trigger a modern-day ice age, with winter temperatures across Northern Europe plummeting to new cold extremes, bringing far more snow and ice. The AMOC has collapsed in the past -- notably before the last Ice Age that ended about 12,000 years ago. "It is a direct threat to our national resilience and security," Iceland Climate Minister Johann Pall Johannsson said by email. "(This) is the first time a specific climate-related phenomenon has been formally brought before the National Security Council as a potential existential threat." Elevation of the issue means Iceland’s ministries will be on alert and coordinating a response, Johannsson said. The government is assessing what further research and policies are needed, with work underway on a disaster preparedness policy. Risks being evaluated span a range of areas, from energy and food security to infrastructure and international transportation. RIPPLE EFFECTS An Atlantic current collapse could have consequences far beyond Northern Europe. It could potentially destabilize longtime rainfall patterns relied upon by subsistence farmers across Africa, India and South America, according to scientists. It could also contribute to faster warming in Antarctica, where sea ice surrounding the southernmost continent as well as ice sheets atop it are already under threat from climate change. Other climate ministries and meteorological offices across Northern Europe told Reuters they are funding more research while weighing possible risks in their climate adaptation plans. Ireland's weather service said its scientists briefed the country’s prime minister last year and a parliamentary committee last month. Norway's environment ministry said it was "seeking to deepen our understanding of the issue through new research" before determining whether to classify AMOC as a security risk. Britain said it was following scientific reports that suggested an abrupt collapse was unlikely during this century, while directing more than 81 million pounds into research to understand when the Earth's climate systems might be pushed to a point of no return. "The science is evolving quite rapidly and time is running out to do anything about it because the tipping point may well be quite close," said oceanographer and climatologist Stefan Rahmstorf from Germany's Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. Iceland is not taking any chances, as the pace of warming speeds up and greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise. The sprawling ruins lie 85 feet below the surface near the town of Gevaş, just 150 miles from Mount Ararat, the mountain traditionally believed to be the final resting place of the biblical boat. Geological evidence suggests that the ruins were submerged 12,000 to 14,500 years ago, when a Mount Nemrut eruption blocked the Mirat River, and caused massive flooding during the Younger Dryas, a period of extreme climate upheaval. While mainstream scholars dismiss the theory, many independent researchers believe this disaster wiped out an advanced civilization, one so ancient that it may have inspired the earliest versions of the Great Flood story. 'As far as I'm aware, any civilizations in the last 6,000 years did not have the technological means to create the type of stonework we're seeing here,' said independent researcher Matt LaCroix, who spoke about the discovery on the Matt Beall Limitless podcast. LaCroix and an international dive team are preparing to explore the site in September using advanced imaging tools to map the ruins, which he believes could help rewrite humanity's timeline. The underwater complex spans more than half a mile, featuring a stone fortress flanked by circular temples with precisely carved masonry. There is also a capstone engraved with a six-spoked 'Flower of Life' symbol, an ancient motif also found at sacred sites in Peru and Bolivia. He explained how soil sampling and analysis of Mount Nemrut show clear evidence of a massive eruption around 12,000 years ago. As a result, Lake Van's water level rose dramatically, over 100 feet, according to some estimates. Because stone cannot be carbon-dated, researchers hope to find organic material, such as sediment layers or artifacts, which could confirm the age of the ruins. But collecting such evidence underwater poses major challenges. The site’s sophisticated stonework, with tightly interlocking blocks, angular joints, and no visible binding agents, appears to rival the engineering seen in megalithic sites like Sacsayhuamán in Peru. 'You can see that the temple has been significantly damaged, said LaCroix. 'All the stones on the top have broken off except those at the edges. The site resembles Peruvian masonry, with precisely angled stones forming triangular joints, and only the front appears flat. It's beautiful and would have been perfectly carved.' He believes the shared architectural features, symbolic motifs, and astronomical alignments across sites in Turkey, South America and Asia suggest the existence of a long-lost global civilization. Scholars have long acknowledged that the biblical flood story likely evolved from earlier Mesopotamian texts. Ancient cuneiform tablets from Sumerian, Akkadian, and Babylonian cultures, such as the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Atrahasis, and the Eridu Genesis, describe a massive flood sent to destroy early civilization, and a chosen man who builds a vessel to save life on Earth. In these tales, the survivor is called Ziusudra or Utnapishtim, names predating Noah by thousands of years. Excavation logs from Shuruppak, Iraq, believed to be the home of this early flood survivor, show a distinct flood layer above ancient Sumerian ruins. These records, uncovered at the Penn Museum, provide physical evidence of a catastrophic event similar to those described in the ancient texts. Even the Babylonian Map of the World, the oldest known map, marks the Ararat region near Lake Van as a place of ancient significance, possibly linked to tales of a lone survivor who emerged after a global deluge. LaCroix argues that the biblical version is not being dismissed but rather reframed in its historical and cultural context. He told Beall to picture a thriving civilization along Lake Van, building temples and structures on stable, elevated ground they believed would last forever. One of the most famous disasters resulting from this combination is the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which destroyed the city of Pompeii in 79 A.D. Now scientists are worried an even bigger disaster could be on the horizon. "With 24 hidden underground craters, the Campi Flegrei, a so-called supervolcano, dwarfs the better-known Vesuvius," said Politico. Since the summer of 2023, several small earthquakes have appeared in the region, causing concern around a potentially catastrophic future eruption. Could there be a supervolcanic eruption on the horizon? The tremors are causing concern among both scientists and residents of the Camp Flegrei region. "The scientific community agrees that the tremors and uplift are signs that the volcano is awakening," but they are "struggling to rectify two competing explanations" for the occurrence, said Scientific American. "An answer to the geological mystery could bring scientists much closer to determining how likely the volcano is to blow," and it could also "provide geologists worldwide with warning signs they could look for when other big volcanoes start rumbling, especially supervolcanoes." The last time the Campi Flegrei supervolcano erupted was 500 years ago, and the effects were widespread. "Its last eruption in 1538 led to the formation of a mountain," said Politico. "And a massive blowout 40,000 years ago cloaked much of eastern Europe with ash —- with traces found as far away as today's Russia." Camp Flegrei is incredibly large, making it difficult to determine and predict volcanic activity. "The eruptions migrate over time, so we'll never know where, nor when of course, there'll be the next eruption," Vincenzo Morra, a geologist at the University of Naples Federico II, said to the BBC. "And that of course makes the Campi Flegrei more dangerous than Vesuvius." The entire Camp Flegrei region is now being analyzed and studied. Scientists are using drones "equipped with thermal monitoring devices to study surface temperatures around the fumaroles," which are "vents in the Earth's surface that emit steam and hot volcanic gases like sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide," said BBC Science Focus. Governments are also determining what actions could be taken by the people living in the Camp Flegrei region. Some solutions include rehousing programs and the prevention of new development in the region due to high risk levels. However, "what could be equally problematic for the government is that many more [residents] will want to stay, avoiding uprooting their families and protecting their homes amid fears about looting," said Politico. The water line is receding at the docks as the ground rises. Thousands of earthquakes, including one that drove 1,500 people into temporary shelter, are sending shock waves of fear through coastal communities. Residents are keeping emergency bags packed, preparing for larger quakes, or worse, an eruption some experts fear could prove devastating. Nearly 80,000 people blithely inhabit the sulfurous caldera, playing soccer in the streets and cooking rich ragus in apartments with majestic views of Capri and Ischia, the emerald isles across the Gulf of Naples. In total, an estimated 485,000 people live in the designated danger zone of a smoke-belching behemoth the ancient Romans thought was an entrance to hell. The most pessimistic experts suggest it may even be time to consider relocating, presenting residents with a stark choice: Should they stay -- or should they go? The crisis is escalating a debate within Italy's scientific community about the extent of the threat from the 8-mile-wide monster pockmarked with more than two dozen craters and believed to have caused the most violent eruption of prehistoric Europe. There is no indication of a sudden rise in magma that could signal an imminent eruption. But volcanic events can be highly unpredictable, and the new cycle of volcanic earthquakes -- along with a measurable rise of the ground by 2 cm a month -- are worrying. An eruption could range from the kind of limited burst that upended a boardwalk in Yellowstone National Park last month to something catastrophic. The fields, experts say, have the potential to wreak more havoc than Mount Vesuvius, about 25 miles away, during its historic destruction of Pompeii in 79 AD. A number of scientists are warning of a possible tipping point -- but no one more so than Giuseppe Mastrolorenzo, a senior researcher with Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) who is engaged in a public fight with the agency he serves, arguing it is not taking the threat seriously enough. He describes a worst-case scenario in which a deep fissure opens in the earth, spewing a mushroom cloud of noxious gas, superheated ash and pyroclastic material. At night, emissions would be wreathed in lightning bolts. The view of the coastline would be shrouded by a deadly black veil. In the aftermath, white-gray ash and rock would blanket the land. Even a significantly smaller but still strong eruption, he said, "could devastate the entire metropolitan area of ​​Naples, with its 3 million inhabitants." "The pressure could release like a bomb," he said, standing under the scorching sun and gazing down at a massive crater lake formed during the last significant Phlegraean eruption in 1538. Some of his own bosses -- as well as Pozzuoli Mayor Luigi Manzoni -- dismiss such talk as fearmongering, arguing there is no need to abandon this sun-kissed land now. The danger is serious but manageable; the threat of a major eruption remote. The bigger threat, they say, would be a new wave of volcanic earthquakes. They believe it can be handled without the kind of costly evacuations and building reinforcements that occurred in the 1980s, the last time the Phlegraean Fields rumbled to life. The national government, meanwhile, is sending conflicting signals. On one hand, Rome last month imposed a temporary construction ban, and a leading minister called it "criminal" that people were ever allowed to settle in the shadow of such a threat. Yet Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has also appeared to incentivize staying. She has given in to local politicians and championed a 1.2 billion euro redevelopment of a blighted waterfront at risk from the volcano, including a new urban park, land reclamation projects, new housing and infrastructure. The threat "has always existed in Pozzuoli," Manzoni said. "We have to learn to coexist with it." The Ominous Science Italy is the most volcanically active country in continental Europe, and two of the country's most active volcanoes are in the midst of minor eruptions. On the southern island of Stromboli, the eponymous volcano is spewing lava with more bark than bite. In Sicily, showy Mount Etna is blowing her top, provoking minor inconveniences as opposed to general panic. And then there is Campi Flegrei, the fiery or Phlegraean fields in English, a volcano with nearly half its caldera in the Mediterranean Sea. Rock samples suggest a mega eruption here 39,000 years ago touched off a volcanic winter in Europe linked to the extinction of the Neanderthals. Though magma underneath the Phlegraean Fields is not surging upward, the volcano has been growing more dangerous, said Giovanni Chiodini, a retired geochemist formerly in charge of the area's geochemical surveillance and who has published academic articles on the Phlegraean Fields. The volcano's magma is depressurizing, releasing gas as well as vapor that rises through rock and liquefies. "If we were talking about a volcano in Antarctica, we would all be saying that it's moving toward an eruption," says Chiodini, suggesting that there's greater reluctance to alarm people in a populated area like Italy. Chiodini said the volcano is just as likely to settle down as erupt, but it's the uncertainty that's causing anxiety. How much warning residents would get is anybody's guess. In the 1538 eruption, earthquakes were so severe and continuous that ancient residents had days, even weeks, to leave. Current evacuation plans -- being fine-tuned for speed and efficiency -- assume 72 hours to get half a million people to safety. But Mastrolorenzo argues that an eruption could happen with only a few hours' notice and threaten metropolitan Naples, Italy's third largest city. The area may not be prepared. Evacuations during the May quake were disastrous, citizens say; some drivers got stuck in gridlocked traffic and were forced walk to the safety of a beach. A subsequent evacuation saw only a handful of participants. For decades, the Macellum of Pozzuoli, the column-studded ruins of an ancient market, have risen and fallen as volcanic activity has alternately lifted or depressed the earth beneath its foundations. The ruins are now again in a period of lift, with a rising watermark of between 2 and 4 cm per month since last year, though still far less than the 14-meter increase witnessed in less than a year ahead of the 1538 eruption. Carlo Doglioni, the INGV's director, said the rise in the land is not as dramatic as the last major volcanic disturbances here four decades ago. Citizens should be concerned, he said, but he criticized Mastrolorenzo's doomsaying. There is a yellow warning in effect in the area. But current readings, he said, do not suggest "people should evacuate at this time." "Mastrolorenzo is looking for visibility, to attract attention," he said. Still, Doglioni said it would also be "wrong" to underestimate the risk. Asked if people should leave Pozzuoli, he said: "I personally would not love to go there to live." The Threat Is Clear On July 26 at 1:46 p.m., Andrea Vitale, a 67-year-old retired schoolteacher, froze in the kitchen of his apartment built inside the Phlegraean Field's caldera. He heard a big bang and felt an undulating sensation, as if the building was riding a wave. In the living room, his young granddaughter screamed. Balou, his pit bull mix, barked incessantly. A crack appeared on a living room wall. "In Pompeii, they had no idea," he said. "But the threat is clear to us. That's what they'll say when they find us in the ash." July's 4.0 temblor was the second significant quake in two months. A May 20 quake, measuring 4.4, did more damage, forcing the evacuation of three schools, a women's prison and more than 100 families. Others, like Vitale, have homes that were reinforced during the 1980s, when his neighborhood was evacuated for 18 months. But even some of those structures have begun to crack. Citizen groups insist the local government is purposely downplaying the threat and that the national government should do more, for instance by offering additional, faster assistance for repairs and aid for residents who want to relocate. "They have minimized the problem to try not to scare people because they are more concerned about the economy," said Laura Lovinelli, head of the Campi Flegrei citizen's group. Nello Musumeci, Italy's minister for civil protection, acknowledged that a government plan for massive redevelopment in a neighboring red zone town appeared to contradict efforts to discourage new construction in the area. The local government is offering stipends to residents in temporary housing from the May quake, and the national government has approved subsidies to help with construction. But the state cannot handle all the expenses, Musumeci said, suggesting that residents who choose to live here must share the cost. As tourism drops, restaurants have closed, and business is down. Rossana Maurelli, 56, said sales at her family's ceramic shop -- selling dishes emblazoned with fiery scenes of volcanic eruptions -- have fallen 60 to 70 percent since last year. She recognizes the danger. Today, the local beach is the only place where she finds peace. She said she goes there daily to avoid sitting in her apartment, where she sometimes imagines its walls caving in. But she can't envision leaving Pozzuoli, her family's home for generations. Our Sun May Be Overdue For A 'Superflare' Stronger Than Billions Of Atomic Bombs, New Research Warns By Ben Turner LiveScience December 12, 2024 Observations made using a new method have revealed that sun-like stars produce cataclysmic superflares once every hundred years. Superflares are solar megastorms thousands of times more powerful than regular solar flares, capable of wreaking incalculable damage as they fry electronics, wipe data servers and send satellites tumbling from space. Past studies, made by observing stars similar to our own, suggested that superflares likely happened once every few thousand years. But now, a new study of 56,000 sun-like stars has revealed that stars like ours may experience powerful superflares much more often than we thought — roughly once every century. However, some crucial questions remain. The researchers published their findings Dec. 13 in the journal Science. "Our results demonstrate that stars with Sun-like [stars] ... can indeed produce superflares," Valeriy Vasilyev, a doctoral student at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, told Live Science in an email. "Ionizing radiation, UV, and X-rays during a superflare (as well as from a [coronal mass ejection, a plasma wave launched from the sun] if it accompanies the superflare) can have significant impacts. Details such as the impact on Earth's atmosphere, magnetosphere, and technological systems are important subjects for further investigation." The sun is a gigantic ball of plasma whose charged ions swirl over its surface to create powerful magnetic fields. As magnetic-field lines cannot cross each other, sometimes these fields knot before suddenly snapping to launch bursts of radiation called solar flares, which are sometimes accompanied by enormous coronal mass ejections (CMEs). If these outbursts are facing Earth, the X-rays and ultraviolet radiation produced by the flares knock electrons from atoms in the upper atmosphere, forming an ionized screen that high-frequency radio waves cannot bounce off that leads to radio blackouts. These blackouts occur over the areas lit by the sun during the time of the flare and last one or two hours. One of the largest solar storms in recent history was the 1859 Carrington Event, which released roughly the same energy as 10 billion 1-megaton atomic bombs. After slamming into Earth, the powerful stream of solar particles set telegraph systems around the world on fire and caused auroras brighter than the light of the full moon to appear as far south as the Caribbean. Yet some evidence, such as sudden spikes in radiocarbon levels found inside ancient tree rings, suggests that our sun could be capable of producing flares hundreds of times stronger than the Carrington Event. If pointed toward Earth, these storms could prove to be disastrous. To investigate the likelihood of a superflare being produced by our sun, the researchers behind the new study used NASA's Kepler space telescope to study 56,450 stars, identifying 2,889 superflares coming from 2,527 stars like our sun between 2009 and 2013. Compared to previous studies, this is a significant step up in the frequency of devastating superflares, a result the researchers attribute to biases in past experiments, such as only measuring stars with rotation periods similar to our sun. As most rotation periods (which are tied to solar activity) are difficult to detect, this led a lot of stars like ours to be excluded from prior observations. But the astronomers behind the study developed a new method to work around these biases. "We employed a new flare detection method developed by our group to identify flare sources in light curves and images with sub-pixel resolution, accounting for instrumental effects," Vasilyev said. "This method has been applied for the first time to detect superflares, enabling the analysis of a much larger sample of stars." However, despite their troubling findings, some assumptions within the study remain unexplored. These include possible unobserved differences between our own sun and the sun-like stars they observed flaring. For example, 30% of these flaring stars exist in binary pairs — two stars orbiting a shared center of gravity — which could be triggering superflares through tidal interactions. Loose ends such as these will need to be investigated further before we can be sure that the sun is likely to pummel Earth with a superflare soon, the researchers say. In the meantime, they recommend better forecasting of the sun to predict when it might throw its next extreme tantrum — an endeavor which will be helped by the planned launch of the European Space Agency’s Vigil probe in 2031. Vigliotti May 29, 2019 https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2018RG000629 Abstract: It has long been speculated that biological evolution was influenced by ultraviolet radiation (UVR) reaching the Earth's surface, despite imprecise knowledge of the timing of both UVR flux and evolutionary events. The past strength of Earth's dipole field provides a proxy for UVR flux because of its role in maintaining stratospheric ozone. The timing of Quaternary evolutionary events has become better constrained by fossil finds, improved radiometric dating, use of dung fungi as proxies for herbivore populations, and improved ages for nodes in human phylogeny from human mitochondrial DNA and Y chromosomes. The demise of Neanderthals at ~41 ka can now be closely tied to the intensity minimum associated with the Laschamp magnetic excursion, and the survival of anatomically modern humans can be attributed to differences in the aryl hydrocarbon receptor that has a key role in the evolutionary response to UVR flux. Fossil occurrences and dung-fungal proxies in Australia indicate that episodes of Late Quaternary extinction of mammalian megafauna occurred close to the Laschamp and Blake magnetic excursions. Fossil and dung fungal evidence for the age of the Late Quaternary extinction in North America (and Europe) coincide with a prominent decline in geomagnetic field intensity at ~13 ka. Over the last ~200 kyr, phylogeny based on mitochondrial DNA and Y chromosomes in modern humans yields nodes and bifurcations in evolution corresponding to geomagnetic intensity minima, which supports the proposition that UVR reaching Earth's surface influenced mammalian evolution with the loci of extinction controlled by the geometry of stratospheric ozone depletion.
