During a congressional hearing, Democratic Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib stated that it was necessary to “stand up against this fascist takeover,” asserting that it was not a bad word but a fact. Her words provoked a strong reaction from Republican Congressman Byron Donalds, who interrupted her once her speaking time had ended. Donalds said it was “insane” that Tlaib, lacking a solid argument, resorted to referring to him and some of his colleagues as if they were from the “Third Reich.” He then asked her directly: “Do I look like a member of the Third Reich to you, Ms. Tlaib?”

The exchange grew more heated when Tlaib, instead of responding directly, accused Donalds of engaging in “ghost voting,” implying that he had cast votes in Congress while absent. In the midst of the altercation, Tlaib began chanting “Free DC! Free DC!” until Committee Chairman James Comer intervened in an attempt to restore order in the room.

The clash between Tlaib and Donalds was marked by the accusation of Republicans being “fascists” and the comparison to the Third Reich, which drew strong criticism of the tone of the debate and highlighted the growing polarization within Congress.
