Al Jazeera’s James Bays reports from the UN headquarters, New York. He says that the United States veto certainly does not serve the people of Gaza. This is the sixth (6th - 6) time the United States have used their power of veto in nearly two years at the Security Council, blocking what is vital for the people of Gaza – most notably a ceasefire, which was one of the very first things listed in this draft resolution. Bays adds that it was a resolution drawn up by 10 out of 15 Security Council members; the 10 who are the non-permanent members but also supported by all of the permanent members – EXCEPT for one, the United States.

The United States vetoed a crucial United Nations Security Council resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza, as Israel expanded its scorched-earth offensive on Gaza City. The resolution, approved by 14 of the 15 members of the council on Thursday Sept. 18, 2025, called for an “immediate, unconditional, & permanent ceasefire in Gaza, respected by all parties”, the release of all captives held by Hamas and other groups, and a lifting of restrictions on humanitarian aid into Gaza.
