Throughout human history, pigeons served as a critical military communication technology for over 2,500 years. Beginning in ancient Persia around 500 BCE and refined by Romans and Genghis Khan's Mongol Empire, these birds' remarkable homing abilities allowed messages to travel up to 300 miles daily across vast territories. Pigeons reached their peak military importance during World Wars I and II, when armies maintained sophisticated pigeon corps with mobile lofts and specialized training. These birds delivered messages with over 98% reliability when traditional communication failed, saved hundreds of soldiers, and even participated in advanced applications like aerial photography and intelligence gathering (Operation Columba). Though electronic communication eventually replaced pigeon systems by the Korean War, with the last military pigeon unit disbanded by the Swiss Army in 1996, their legacy continues in modern military communication principles: redundancy, mobility, and maintaining channels when conventional infrastructure fails.
