La ambientación de World at War se sitúa durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, asimismo, se enmarcan algunas de sus batallas como Peleliu, Okinawa y la batalla de Berlín. El juego protagoniza a tres personajes: C. Miller, un marine estadounidense que se hace partícipe en el frente del Pacífico; Dimitri Petrenko, un soldado del Ejército Rojo concurriendo en la batalla de Stalingrado, conociendo en ésta al sargento Viktor Reznov, personaje con el cual mantendrá una amistad durante toda la trama; John Locke, un artillero estadounidense durante la batalla de Okinawa

World at War is set during World War II, and features some of its battles, such as Peleliu, Okinawa, and the Battle of Berlin. The game stars three characters: C. Miller, an American marine who takes part in the Pacific Front; Dimitri Petrenko, a Red Army soldier who participated in the Battle of Stalingrad, where he met Sergeant Viktor Reznov, a character with whom he would remain friends throughout the story; and John Locke, an American gunner during the Battle of Okinawa.
