In this video, I wanted to look at a second text that addresses the loneliness “epidemic”, The Lonely American: Drifting Apart in the Twenty-first Century by psychiatrists Jacqueline Olds, M.D and Richard Schwartz, M.D. The book contrasts well with the previous work I discussed by John Cacioppo and William Patrick. In this second text, Olds and Schwartz outline how it is perfectly acceptable, or “unquestionably helpful,” to diagnose lonely individuals as having a mental illness, even though loneliness is a wide-spread and social issue.
