How Netanyahu Came To Power | Rabin Assassination | 1995

Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu first became Prime Minister of Israel on June 18, 1996, after winning the country's first direct election for the office, defeating incumbent Shimon Peres.
His election followed the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin on November 4, 1995.
Rabin, who had signed the Oslo Accords with the Palestine Liberation Organization, was killed by an Israeli right-wing extremist opposed to the peace process.

Netanyahu's rise to power was shaped by the political climate after Rabin's assassination. As leader of the opposition and head of the Likud party since 1993, Netanyahu had been a vocal critic of the Oslo Accords, which many on the Israeli right viewed as a threat to national security.

In his 2022 autobiography, Netanyahu made claims suggesting the Shin Bet security service had incited right-wing elements against Rabin through an agent provocateur, prompting a letter from former Shin Bet leaders accusing him of spreading conspiracy theories and demanding a retraction.
Netanyahu was elected in the aftermath of the assassination, capitalizing on public anxiety and divisions over the peace process.
