In 2019, the “Area 51 raid” began as a joke Facebook event titled “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us,” inviting people to rush the secretive U.S. Air Force base in Nevada to “see them aliens.” The post went viral, attracting millions of responses worldwide and sparking countless memes about UFOs and government secrets. Although the U.S. military warned against any attempt to trespass, thousands of curious fans and conspiracy enthusiasts still traveled to Nevada. Instead of an actual raid, it turned into a festival-like gathering near the towns of Rachel and Hiko, with music, camping, and cosplay.

Only a few people tried to approach the base gates, and two were arrested, but overall the event became a lighthearted internet-fueled cultural moment rather than the mass invasion some had joked about.
