The Scramble for Africa was the aggressive seizure and division of African territories by European powers between the late 19th century and the outbreak of World War I in 1914. Driven by industrial competition, a desire for raw materials like gold and diamonds, and nationalistic rivalries, European nations rapidly colonized almost the entire continent. This process culminated in events like the Berlin Conference (1884-85), where rules were laid out for European annexation, and had lasting, often negative, consequences for African people and political structures.
