Guineans have voted in a constitutional referendum that critics allege is a manoeuvre by the military leadership to consolidate its authority. The vote, held under a significant security presence and a ban on protests, could pave the way for the current transitional president to run for a further seven-year term. The prime minister stated the poll would return the country to constitutional order and end its international isolation. While supporters cite benefits like increased female representation, the opposition was severely restricted, with parties suspended and leaders in exile. The government deployed thousands of security personnel to deter unrest. The process is now focused on counting the votes that will determine the nation's political future.

Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris reports from the Guinean capital, Conakry.
