High Stakes UN Summit on Two-State Solution for Israelis and Palestinians
Greater Israel is in the Torah
Google AI Overview
Yes, the Torah describes a large territory considered part of the "Greater Israel" concept, though the exact borders vary and are debated, with some interpretations extending from the Nile to the Euphrates. The foundational passage is Genesis 15:18–21, which describes the land promised to Abraham's descendants. While not a specific biblical term, "Greater Israel" is a modern Zionist idea referencing these historical biblical borders, which are also elaborated in other Torah books like Exodus and Deuteronomy.
Biblical References for Land Size
Genesis 15:18–21: This is a foundational passage that describes the land promised to Abraham and his descendants, "from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates". This broad definition forms the basis of the modern concept of "Greater Israel".
Exodus 23:31: This passage provides a similar, slightly more detailed border description: "from the Red Sea to the Sea of the Philistines (the Mediterranean) and from the desert to the Euphrates".
Deuteronomy 1:7 and 11:24: These verses speak of a larger territory to be given to the children of Israel over time, implying a significant portion of the land, and are sometimes cited in the context of "Greater Israel".
"Greater Israel" as a Modern Concept
Zionist Origins: The concept of "Greater Israel" is not a term from the Torah itself, but a modern Zionist idea that draws on the biblical promises of the land.
Geographic Scope: It refers to a larger territory than the modern state of Israel, sometimes including the West Bank, Gaza, parts of Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt.
Debate and Interpretation: There are varying interpretations of these biblical passages and their relationship to modern borders, with some viewing the idea as an expansionist conspiracy theory and others as a valid fulfillment of God's promise.

On Monday, the UN General Assembly holds a special summit on the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip. It is a continuation of a diplomatic project led by France and Saudi Arabia to push for the revival of the two-state solution — in which Israelis and Palestinians would exist side by side — as the only answer to the decades long conflict.
At Monday's meeting, several countries have said they will join the more than 145 UN members that already recognize a Palestinian state. These include France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Malta.
Most of the recent European declarations on recognizing Palestinian statehood have come as a result of Israel's ongoing military offensive in Gaza that has killed more than 65,000 people, according to health officials in the enclave; international researchers estimate the toll to be much higher. Last week, the UN's Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory published a report concluding that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
Israel and its primary ally, the United States, have rejected this report and others that have come to the same conclusion and denounced any plans to recognize Palestine as a state, claiming that doing so would be a "reward for terror" — referring to the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel led by the Hamas militant group.
Israel has launched a new offensive in Gaza and advanced the controversial E1 settlement plan despite a UN finding of genocide. Prime Minister Netanyahu vowed never to allow a Palestinian state, calling it his spiritual mission to build a 'Greater Israel'. His remarks have outraged the Arab world with warnings of a wider regional war after fresh Israeli strikes on Gaza and Qatar.
