Part 88: AWS CEO Matt Garman – Security Promises vs. Fraud Reality

Garman says: “The number one and most important thing is fast escalation and being transparent. Holding on to bad news is never the right answer.” He also highlights weekly CEO–CISO security meetings where risks are supposedly reviewed at the highest level.

But when victims filed abuse reports with AWS Trust & Safety, the company issued case numbers and then did nothing — no transparency, no takedowns, just continued billing scammers.

This contradiction exposes how AWS’s promises don’t match their actions. Under the Espinal doctrine, once a company undertakes an abuse-report system, it has a duty to act reasonably. AWS breached that duty, enabling crypto fraud while claiming security is “in their DNA.”
