A Good Ol’ Live Model Session

This pastel drawing ‘Model Session – 16-09-25 – 1’ reveals a bit of cubism applied to live model sketching. Pastel and Ingres paper are perfect for this style. By the way, drawing sessions have started this month again. Always a pleasure and even an indulgence to look forward to. I have always loved a good ol’ live model session because it beats sketching from photos by a mile. Unfortunately cows I drew two weeks ago don’t stand still but human models actually do when instructed. Jelco was our first model we welcomed. He’s a good and quite poser who can hold a position easily for one hour.

A Bit of Cubism

Back in June last live pastel drawing I made also was a cubist one. For the moment I think I have done enough realist pastels. The downside is you always have to elaborate these back in your studio. One hour won’t do most of the times. This having said, the pastel more or less have become a bit realistic nevertheless even though not planned. On express demand of a participant he posed for us with his knees drawn up. Which was fun for a change for sure. However, I didn’t feel comfort enough to abstrac this clumply position cubistically.

A Sort of Satisfied

There it was, a first attempt and I’m not unhappy with the result. The lighting in Municipal centre ‘De Blauwe Tram’ in Leidschendam is conducive to a great tonal distribution. The angle from which I looked is a bit too straight on the model, I think. In my studio I enforced some straight planes and lines. It improved a bit but you can’t change the pose around of course. Still worth the effort and publication on my website.
