Britain, Australia and Canada officially recognized a Palestinian state on Sunday, drawing an angry response from Israel, which has ruled out such a possibility.

According to the Associated Press, the coordinated move by the three Commonwealth nations and longtime allies reflects growing anger over Israel's actions in the Gaza war and steps taken by the Israeli government to obstruct efforts to create a Palestinian state, including by further expanding settlements in the West Bank.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has faced pressure to take a tougher stance on Israel within his ruling Labour Party over the worsening situation in Gaza, said the UK's move was intended to "rekindle hope for peace for Palestinians and Israelis."

He insisted that this was not a reward for Hamas, which was behind the October 7, 2023 attack in which the militants killed about 1,200 people and kidnapped 251 more.

The actions of the three countries prompted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to declare that the creation of a Palestinian state "will not happen," while Hamas called on the international community to isolate Israel.
