On July 4, 2020, 8-year-old Secoriea Turner was riding in the back seat of a Jeep with her mother and a family friend when gunfire broke out near the burned-down Wendy’s in Atlanta, where protesters had set up barricades after the death of Rayshard Brooks. A bullet struck Secoriea, killing her, in what prosecutors describe as a senseless act of violence.
The state says Julian Conley was armed with a rifle that night and opened fire on the vehicle, hitting Secoriea. He is now on trial for malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and gang-related charges. Another man, Jerrion McKinney, previously entered an Alford plea to related charges and received a 40-year sentence, with 20 years to serve.
The trial began in September 2025 in Fulton County Superior Court. Investigators testified about video footage and witness accounts that they say identify Conley as the shooter. The defense argues that witnesses gave conflicting descriptions and that investigators never conducted a proper lineup.
