"TANTURA" Documentary 2022

The documentary film Tantura, released in 2022, examines the massacre of Palestinian civilians in the coastal village of Tantura during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

The film explores the conflicting narratives surrounding the event, where Israelis refer to the war as their "War of Independence," while Palestinians call it "Nakba" (the Catastrophe).

Directed by Alon Schwarz, the documentary centers on the research of Israeli scholar Teddy Katz, who in the late 1990s investigated the massacre and compiled 140 hours of audio testimonies from former Israeli soldiers of the Alexandroni Brigade. Despite his work being discredited and his reputation damaged, the audio recordings remain a crucial part of the film. Schwarz revisits these former soldiers, now elderly, and confronts them with Katz's recordings, revealing unsettling accounts of war crimes, including beatings, rapes, looting, and the killing of nearly 300 Palestinian civilians after the village had surrendered.

The film also includes interviews with Palestinian residents who survived the events.
A central theme is why the term "Nakba" remains taboo within Israeli society, highlighting how power, silencing, and protected narratives have shaped the country's founding myth and historical memory. The documentary features never-before-seen archival footage from the 1948 war and has been recognized with awards, including the Best Research Award at the 2022 Docaviv Film Festival.
