"Many are called but few are chosen"; "You have not chosen me but I have chosen you"

The biblical verses “many are called but few are chosen” and “ye have not chosen me but I have chosen you” are often interpreted as conflating a “calling” with being “chosen”, one of the “elect to salvation from the foundation of the world” as taught by Calvinism.
Is the one-off gift of “being saved” the same as the works of “service”?
“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide [is] the gate, and broad [is] the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait [is] the gate, and narrow [is] the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” (Matthew 7:13 to 14)
“Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.” (Luke 13:23 to 24)
