The Kremlin calls such people a "special contingent" that must be "exhausted to zero." The doctor also openly stated that the mobilized will also be "zeroed out." However, the "special contingent" is a different story, since the Kremlin does not know where to put it after the war. He made it clear that anyone who signed a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense was automatically signing a “life sentence,” and there was no turning back.

The scale of casualties since the full-scale invasion in 2022 is a direct result of Russia’s approach to warfare, which is to send waves of troops into enemy fire, sacrificing many so that a few can pass. Russia is now changing the way it fights in Ukraine because of its high casualty rate. It is now using small, dispersed units because of the loss of large numbers of junior officers. While replacements are recruited from the ranks and quickly undergo reduced training, these new officers have neither the training nor the experience to command larger formations of soldiers.

The heavy casualties on the battlefield in Ukraine are also putting considerable strain on Russia’s recruitment efforts. In the absence of a general mobilization, which Putin is reluctant to announce, the Defense Ministry has had to resort to creative solutions to meet the insatiable demand for manpower caused by the war. One response is to return wounded soldiers to combat until they are fully recovered. Some Russian soldiers have reportedly complained that they are being forced to return to the front before they have completed their treatment.
