Democrat succeeds her late father in Congress as GOP House majority shrinks

Democrat Adelita Grijalva has won a special election in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District, filling the seat left vacant by her father Raul Grijalva’s death and narrowing the Republican House majority to 219-214.

Grijalva, a former Pima County supervisor, defeated Republican Daniel Butierez in the heavily Democratic, Hispanic-majority district, securing over 60% of the primary vote in a five-candidate race.

She becomes Arizona’s first Latina in Congress and pledged to oppose President Trump’s policies, including the controversial “One Big Beautiful Bill,” while supporting efforts to release Jeffrey Epstein files.

The district spans from Yuma to Tucson and has been in Democratic hands for over two decades, Fox News has reported.

Other special elections remain pending in Texas’s 18th and Tennessee’s 7th districts, keeping the House majority in flux.
