NASA launches urgent mission to protect GPS, power grids from solar storms

Three satellites are scheduled to launch Wednesday on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center to study space weather and its effects on Earth.

NASA focuses on astronaut safety, while NOAA handles civilian space weather predictions, with the mission aiming to understand how solar activity impacts technology and infrastructure.

The satellites include SWFO-L1, NOAA’s first dedicated space weather observatory; the Carruthers Geocorona Observatory, which studies Earth’s upper atmosphere; and IMAP, which measures solar activity and maps the heliospheric boundary protecting the solar system.

Operating from the L1 point about one million miles toward the sun, the satellites provide an unobstructed view for continuous monitoring, ABC News has reported.

NASA emphasizes that understanding solar activity helps protect technology on Earth and informs the study of habitable planets in other solar systems.
