The Return of the Drifter

Days Gone Remastered brings Bend Studio’s 2019 cult favorite back with modern polish. At its core, it’s still the tale of biker-outlaw Deacon St. John, roaming the broken highways of the Pacific Northwest after a viral outbreak has turned much of humanity into “Freakers.” The remaster leans into what the original did best: tense survival, bike-driven exploration, and overwhelming zombie hordes.

What’s Better

Visuals & Performance – The game finally shines. PS5 and PC players get sharper textures, smoother frame rates, and stronger lighting effects. Wilderness feels denser, Freaker hordes more terrifying, and weather more immersive.

New Modes – Horde Assault (arena-style battles), Permadeath, and a Speedrun option make this version more replayable than before. For challenge seekers, these modes are a big draw.

Core Atmosphere – The bike still feels essential, traversal is smoother, and the wilderness is as gritty and threatening as ever. The sense of isolation mixed with fleeting hope is stronger thanks to technical upgrades.

What’s Still Rough

Repetition – Despite tweaks, mission design is still formulaic. Clearing camps, fetch-quests, and rescue runs repeat often, making the mid-game drag.

Story & Pacing – Deacon’s narrative hasn’t been reworked. Dialogue can be clunky, and emotional beats don’t always land. Those who found the original too uneven won’t be swayed.

Lingering Issues – Bugs, audio imbalance, and the occasional immersion-breaking glitch still show up—disappointing in a remaster.

Verdict

For newcomers, Days Gone Remastered is the definitive edition: bigger, better looking, and richer in content. It’s a strong entry point into Bend Studio’s bleak world of bikers and Freakers. For veterans, the question is whether the new modes and visual boost are enough to justify the return trip.

It remains a flawed gem
