**SHOW NOTES**
1. Scott Cawthon is an American video game developer, writer, and animator best known as the creator of the Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNaF) franchise, which he launched in 2014. He developed the first several games largely on his own, handling programming, design, and writing. While Cawthon is the sole original creator of the series, he has collaborated with others on expanded media. Notably, author Kira Breed-Wrisley co-wrote the official Five Nights at Freddy’s novel trilogy—The Silver Eyes, The Twisted Ones, and The Fourth Closet—with Cawthon.
2. While teen-focused stories existed before, they were often shelved with children’s or adult fiction. The modern YA boom was fueled by hits like Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, and Twilight, which drew massive cross-generational audiences and proved there was a huge market for complex, emotionally resonant stories starring teenage protagonists. Publishers began actively branding and marketing books as “YA,” (in the early 2000’s) creating a distinct category that tackles identity, relationships, trauma, and social issues through a teen lens—making it a dominant force in contemporary publishing.
3. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818) is often seen as one of the earliest expressions of anxiety about scientific overreach and the creation of artificial life—fears that have evolved into modern concerns about machines and humanoids. Victor Frankenstein’s monster, though made of flesh rather than metal, embodies the dread of humans playing god and losing control over their creations.
4. Nominalism is the philosophical view that universal concepts—like "justice," "humanity," or "redness"—do not exist as real, independent entities but are merely names (or nomina) we use to group similar individual things. By denying objective, shared realities beyond particular experiences, nominalism can push thought toward skepticism about any external, knowable truth. In its extreme forms, this can edge toward solipsism—the idea that only one’s own mind is certain to exist—because if there are no real universals or shared essences, then communication, objective knowledge, and even the existence of other minds become uncertain or reducible to personal mental constructs.
5. “A certain atmosphere of breathless and unexplainable dread of outer, unknown forces must be present; and there must be a hint, expressed with a seriousness and portentousness becoming its subject, of that most terrible conception of the human brain—a malign and particular suspension or defeat of those fixed laws of Nature which are our only safeguard against the assaults of chaos and the daemons of unplumbed space.” HP Lovecraft
6. One of the reasons I film these videos with my eyes hidden—hooded, never seen—is to keep the focus where it belongs: on the books themselves. Eyes are often called windows to the soul; they reveal personality, bias, even distraction. By concealing them, I step back as a persona and invite a quieter, more inward kind of engagement. I’ve always closed my eyes to reflect deeply on a story, and by keeping them covered, I remain in a constant state of reflection—immersed in the themes, symbols, and shadows of the texts I discuss. In a way, this choice echoes the very mystery at the heart of The Silver Eyes: what we see (or choose not to see) shapes how we understand the truth beneath the surface.
