Homemade Baklava ∣ Relaxing Baking on a Quiet Afternoon

Today I made baklava, a delicious Greek pastry dessert made up of layers of crispy phyllo dough, chopped walnuts and honey syrup.
Greek or Turkish: that is the question?! - You may be surprised, but baklava has much older origins and has been a part of the Mediterranean desserts table for many years!
Turkish baklava ordinarily uses a light neutral oil, while Greek baklava is made with melted butter; the Greek version is usually a walnut baklava, while the Turkish version is with pistachio.
Nevertheless, baklava remains one of my favorite desserts: sweet, crunchy, nutty, DELICIOUS! Here is what you need to recreate my version of baklava:

For the phyllo dough:

• 1/2 cup vegetable oil
• 1/2 cup water
• 1/2 cup of milk
• 1 Tbsp of baking powder
• 3 and a half cups of flour
• 1 egg

For the syrup:

• 2 cups of sugar
• 3 cups of honey
• juice from one lemon
• rose water

For rolling out the phyllo sheets:
• 200 g starch

For the filling:
• 350 g chopped walnuts

For brushing:
• 250 g butter (melted)
