The recent words of Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill reveal a deeply troubling vision regarding the role of parents in their children’s education and the extent of ideological indoctrination in classrooms. Sherrill stated that she would push for LGBTQ education in schools and made it clear that parents should not have the possibility of opting their children out of such content. In other words, families would be left without a voice or a vote in a matter that directly affects the upbringing and innocence of minors.

The congresswoman attempts to justify her stance by saying that such programs are “to understand the backgrounds of people throughout our nation.” However, under that argument lies the imposition of an ideological agenda that leaves no room for parental judgment and does not respect the diversity of family values. If in so many other areas parents are given the option to supervise and decide, why not here? The answer is clear: because this is about shaping children’s minds under a single narrative, without the right to dissent.

Moreover, Sherrill resorts to an out-of-place example by mentioning the “Naval Academy” and an alleged “erasure of history,” as if that could justify parents losing control over what is taught to their children at basic school levels. It is a forced comparison meant to legitimize a discourse that, at its core, undermines fundamental rights.

What Sherrill defends is not education, but indoctrination. Forcing minors to receive ideological content while denying parents the possibility to intervene represents a direct attack on educational freedom and on the family as the main nucleus in the formation of values. Under the guise of “inclusion,” what is really being sought is the imposition of a single way of thinking that excludes plurality and, above all, undermines the authority of parents over their own children.
