I survived the Gaza genocide after 690 days, with Ahmed Abu Artema

Ahmed Abu Artema is a Palestinian writer, poet and journalist. His vision of a nonviolent mass movement in Gaza to challenge Israel’s siege and blockade of the territory inspired the 2018 Great March of Return.

Israel responded to that joyful, unarmed mobilization of hundreds of thousands of people, young and old, to demand their right of return, in the only way it knows how: Military snipers murdered hundreds of people and maimed thousands more.

For the past two years, Ahmed survived the genocide in Gaza, but lost everything that mattered to him, above all, his 13-year-old son Abdallah, murdered in an Israeli airstrike on the family home.

Ahmed remained in Gaza, alone, until 27 August. On that day, he was evacuated from Gaza by the Dutch government.

We speak to Ahmed about how and why he left Gaza, and what he witnessed there.
