Oklahoma City, OK - It's Friday, and that means it's time for Behind the Body Cam.
We are taking time and highlighting the incredible work the men and women in law enforcement do every day by looking at body camera video. Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson III walks us through it.
"We have Deputy Adan Viloria on a traffic stop in Oklahoma City, and we have an individual who jumped out and fled the traffic stop," said Johnson. "This wasn't the driver. This was the passenger of the traffic stop who fled. So, Viloria obviously pursued this individual."
The video shows the subject eventually stopping near an apartment complex and facing the deputy with his hands in his pockets.
"Hands are what's so dangerous in law enforcement," Johnson said. "Hands are what kill you with, using different weapons and things of that nature. See how the individual turns around, and he's looking at a place to go. So, he's taking commands, but he's looking at 'where I can get away'. So, he then flees and tries to get away from Deputy Viloria, but he is in tremendous shape."
The body cam video shows the first taser deployment, but the deputy does not handcuff the suspect. Johnson explained that time is on their side, and they don't know what the subject might have.
"You want to wait for other law enforcement officials to get there to make it safe for you to drop your taser and then apply handcuffs," Johnson said. "So, he is acting appropriately here. He is calm, cool, very much in control."
The video continues to show the individual moving around, trying to get free of the taser.
"He is looking, he continues to survey the area, 'How can I get away?'" Johnson said. "This is another thing that you want citizens to see. He has been tased once. He didn't just knock out like you see in the movies. Once the taser deployment, once it's finished, and it runs its circuit, you're able to move, you're able to get back up and do everything you were able to do before."
The suspect in this incident, 44-year-old Andrew Dixon, is being charged with eluding and obstructing an officer.
Sheriff Johnson said Dixon had rolls of counterfeit bills on his person and that he could face additional charges.
