Former CIA agent John Kiriakou shares his story of living with diabetes for 21 years before undergoing an experimental surgery that involved the complete removal of his stomach.

Inspired by research published in The Lancet, he discovered that this drastic procedure often restores pancreatic function and eliminates the need for insulin.

After paying out of pocket since insurance would not cover it, Kiriakou says he underwent the robotic surgery, lost 115 pounds, and was completely off diabetes medications within nine months.

He now lives without hunger, eats in small portions, and says the treatment saved his life, though it remains little known due to lack of insurance coverage and pharmaceutical interests.
