Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties - The Complete Collection (1959, animated short compilation)

Dudley Do-Right is a fictional character created by Alex Anderson, Chris Hayward, Allan Burns, Jay Ward, and Bill Scott, who appears as the main protagonist of "Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties", a segment on The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends.

The show follows the misadventures of Dudley Do-Right, a well-meaning but often bumbling Canadian Mountie, as he attempts to thwart the schemes of the villainous Snidely Whiplash and rescue the damsel-in-distress, Nell Fenwick.

The segment parodies early 20th-century melodrama and silent film (the "Northern"), using only a piano as a musical background.

Dudley Do-Right's first appearance specifically incorporates silent film tropes such as intertitles and iris shots, as well as incorporating a similar plot to 1921 silent film O'Malley of the Mounted, starring William S. Hart.

The episode "Stokey the Bear" immediately earned the wrath of the U.S. Forest Service, who threatened legal action against Jay Ward, NBC, and anyone else associated with the show. To placate them, Ward agreed to remove this episode from all future rebroadcasts of the series, and the later "DUDLEY DO-RIGHT SHOW/AND FRIENDS" reissues (he even animated a 1969 PSA featuring Bullwinkle reciting a poem in honor of "Smokey the Bear").
