The Libation Bearers by Aeschylus is the second play in the Oresteia trilogy. It follows Orestes as he returns to Argos to avenge his father Agamemnon’s murder at the hands of his mother, Clytamnestra, and her lover, Aigisthos. The play explores themes of justice, revenge, family loyalty, and the moral complexities of vengeance. Orestes struggles with the duty of matricide, guided by the commands of Apollo and the expectations of justice, while the chorus reflects on the destructive power of women who defy societal norms and the cyclical nature of bloodshed.
