An Independent Scotland_ _ Foreign Policy, EU, and NATO_ _ Prof Stephen Gethins MP

It has been over a decade since Scotland voted on independence. But while it decided to remain with the United Kingdom, the campaign for statehood continues. So, where does the debate stand today? What would the foreign policy of an independent Scotland look like? Could Scotland join the European Union? And how does Scotland view current developments in the rest of Britain, Europe, and the world? To answer all this, I was joined by Professor Stephen Gethins.

Professor Stephen Gethins MP is a leading authority on Scotland’s place in the world. He served as the Member of Parliament for North East Fife from 2015 to 2019 and, since 2024, has been the SNP MP for Arbroath and Broughty Ferry. During his time in Westminster, he has been a prominent advocate for Scotland’s place in the European Union, especially in the wake of Brexit and was the Scottish National Party’s spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Europe. Before entering politics, he worked in conflict resolution, international development, and EU affairs, advising organisations such as the European Commission and NGOs. And as a Professor of International Relations at the University of St Andrews, he continues to shape the conversation around Scotland’s role in the world.
