What does Surah Yunus teach about the Oneness of Allah
Asslamoalaikqum Sisters, Brothers, Friends and elders :
We welcom to you in our series of Statements. And today's
is statement number 41. And we will be describe in this that: ( What does Surah Yunus teach about the Oneness of Allah ) So sisters, brothers friends and elders, Our aim is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, reflect on history, and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance. May Allah Almighty make our this statement beneficial and a source of light for all hearts.
Surah Yunus, the tenth chapter of the Holy Quran, presents a profound reminder of the concept of Tawheed, the absolute Oneness of Allah. The Surah emphasizes that Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer, and Controller of the universe. It challenges false beliefs, refutes the worship of idols, and establishes that ultimate success lies in recognizing and submitting to the Oneness of Allah. Through vivid descriptions, logical arguments, and reminders from the stories of the past, Surah Yunus teaches believers and nonbelievers alike that Tawheed is the foundation of faith and the central message of every Prophet.
At the very beginning of the Surah, Allah describes the Quran as a book of wisdom and guidance. In verse 3, Allah says: “Indeed, your Lord is Allah who created the heavens and the earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne, arranging the matter of His creation. There is no intercessor except after His permission. That is Allah, your Lord, so worship Him. Then will you not remember?” This verse directly affirms Tawheed by declaring that Allah alone is the Creator and the One who manages all affairs. It also denies the idea of independent intercessors, affirming that none can mediate except by Allah’s will.
Surah Yunus further explains that worship belongs to Allah alone. In verse 18, Allah says: “And they worship other than Allah that which neither harms them nor benefits them, and they say, ‘These are our intercessors with Allah.’ Say, ‘Do you inform Allah of something He does not know in the heavens or on the earth?’ Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him.” This verse highlights the futility of idol worship. The Surah makes it clear that attributing partners to Allah is baseless and irrational since idols possess neither power to harm nor benefit.
Another powerful verse that emphasizes Tawheed is verse 31, where Allah asks a series of rhetorical questions: “Say, ‘Who provides for you from the heavens and the earth? Or who controls hearing and sight and who brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living and who arranges every matter?’ They will say, ‘Allah.’ So say, ‘Then will you not fear Him?’” This verse appeals to human logic. Even those who reject Islam admit that Allah is the ultimate provider and controller of life and death, yet they fail to worship Him alone. Surah Yunus uses this acknowledgment to argue for the necessity of Tawheed.
The Surah also links the Oneness of Allah with guidance and salvation. In verse 25, Allah says: “And Allah invites to the Home of Peace and guides whom He wills to a straight path.” Here, the Oneness of Allah is not merely a belief but a pathway to eternal peace. Recognizing Allah as One leads to spiritual security, while associating partners with Him leads to loss and regret in the Hereafter.
The denial of Tawheed is presented in the Surah as the root cause of destruction for past nations. The story of Prophet Yunus himself indirectly points to this reality. Unlike other nations, the people of Yunus eventually believed in Allah’s Oneness and turned in repentance, and as a result, they were spared from punishment. Surah Yunus verse 98 says: “Then has there not been a single city that believed so its faith benefited it except the people of Yunus? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them enjoyment for a time.” This event demonstrates the power of Tawheed in saving an entire nation when they collectively returned to Allah.
The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, also explained the importance of Tawheed in numerous sayings. In Sahih Muslim, Hadith number 28, the Prophet said: “Whoever says La ilaha illallah and denies whatever is worshiped besides Allah, his wealth and blood become protected, and his reckoning is with Allah.” This hadith shows that affirming the Oneness of Allah is the foundation of faith and protection. Without Tawheed, other deeds hold no value.
In another narration in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith number 3435, the Prophet said: “The most superior word I have ever said, and the Prophets before me, is La ilaha illallah.” This statement reinforces that the message of Tawheed was consistent across all Prophets, from Adam to Muhammad. Surah Yunus echoes this universal truth by repeatedly calling humanity to reject false gods and submit to Allah alone.
Surah Yunus also teaches that Tawheed is not limited to worship but extends to trust in Allah’s power and judgment. In verse 107, Allah says: “And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him, and if He intends for you good, then there is no repeller of His bounty. He causes it to reach whom He wills of His servants. And He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” This verse beautifully describes the exclusive authority of Allah in controlling harm and benefit, urging believers to rely solely on Him in every situation.
The concept of Tawheed also protects human beings from arrogance and false reliance. When people understand that only Allah has power over creation, they are humbled and reminded that worldly status, idols, and human strength are insignificant compared to the authority of Allah. Surah Yunus repeatedly emphasizes this so that faith is purified from shirk and directed solely to the worship of the Creator.
In conclusion, Surah Yunus teaches that Tawheed is the essence of faith and the key to salvation. It affirms Allah as the only Creator and Sustainer, rejects idol worship, and calls upon humanity to worship Him alone. The Surah uses logical reasoning, stories of previous nations, and divine signs in creation to establish the Oneness of Allah. It assures believers that recognizing Tawheed leads to guidance and peace, while denial results in regret and punishment. Supported by the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, the teachings of Surah Yunus remind us that Tawheed is not only a belief but a way of life that must govern our worship, actions, and reliance on Allah. This timeless message continues to guide believers toward the straight path and eternal success.
We conclude today's discourse with our this humble supplication: O Allah, purify our hearts, accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and include us among Your grateful servants. Amen
